The International Union of Anthropological and EthnologicalSciences (IUAES) was established on August 23， 1948， when itmerged， in fact， with the Intemational Congress of Anthropologicaland Ethnological Sciences (ICAES)， which was founded in 1934. Thelatter was the product of various Congresses ofAnthropologicalSciences， starting in 1865.
The IUAES is one of the member organizations of the InternationalSocial Science Council (ISSC) and also of the Intemational Councilfor Philosophy and Humanistic Studies (CIPSH). The IUAES is also amember of the Intemational Council of Scientific Uruons (ICSU). Itsaim is to enhance exchange and communication among scholars ofall
regions of the world， in a collective effort to expand humanknowledge. In this way it hopes to contribute to a betterunderstanding of human society， and to a sustainable future basedon harmony between nature and culture.
