(Jack is on his way to the university library carrying hisdictionary.
Jack: Why do you always carry such a thick dictionary with you,awalking dictionary?
Mike: It’s my friend.
Jack: Why not get an electronic one? It’s lighter.
Mike: You’re right.Compared with paper dictionary,an electronic oneis portable.But I’m used
to finding words in a paper dictionary.
Jack: What’s the difference between a paper dictionary and anelectronic one? I don’t have a
paper dictionary.
Mike: You get the word definition from the electronic one.That’sall.
Jack: That’s what we want.
Mike: No,actually what we need is far more than a list ofmeanings.In different contexts,or
different collocations,the meaning of a word varies,althoughslightly.A paper dictionary
usually provides us with a complete list of meanings andcorresponding examples.We
read these examples and find out how the word is used in differentcontexts.With a
simple list of meanings in an electronic dictionary,the usage of aword is not clear.Let’s
take the word “adapt” as an example.What does your electronicdictionary tell you for

Firstly,my English teachers use PPT as a teaching aid in classroom
teaching.In class, 
my teachers give us background information,teach language points
and analyze structures of 
texts with the PPT they created.Let me take the background
information part as an example, 
my teachers not only provide written description of background
information,but also show us 
some video clips containing background information.In this way,we
get both audio and visual 
stimulation.The use of PPT in classrooms gives us more information
and makes learning more

4.Do you do online learning in learning English? How does online
learning 
help you improve your English? 
Online learning,first of all,motives me.Before the computer entered
the realm of language 
study,we were forced to learn English through battling with
ponderous textbooks.Online 
learning,however,gives us visual,audio stimulus and authentic
materials.I read,listen and 
watch both for recreation and language learning.Secondly,I can set
my own speed and arrange 
my own schedule.In a classroom,we have to follow the teacher’s
paces.In online learning, 
however,I make my own schedules.Lastly,I feel relaxed when I learn
English online.When I am 
surrounded by my peers and face my English teacher in a classroom,I
feel rather anxious because 
my English is poor.If I can’t answer teacher’s questions,I feel
more upset.However,in online 
learning I don’t have the pressure.The learning atmosphere is
relaxing.When I face difficulties 
and could not answer certain questions,I may consult reference
books and ask for help from 
the learning forum where there are always good English learners
online.Since we don’t face 
each other,I don’t need to think much about my “face”.Online
learning is really a good way for 
students who get nervous and anxious to keep face. 
5.Which is a more effective way for students to learn
English,classroom 
learning or autonomous learning? 
Well,it’s hard to say one is more effective than the other.In
autonomous learning,learners 
need to have self-discipline.They manage their studies by adjusting
their learning strategies to 
facilitate learning.Learning is done according to learners’
time,interests and capability.Then 
what is the focus of classroom learning? These teachers tend to
take more initiative and play their 
authoritative roles.As a result,students take passive roles and are
more likely to be spoon-fed. 
Generally speaking,autonomous learning combined with classroom
learning is good for learners 
to achieve high language proficiency. 
6.Students nowadays are encouraged to pay more attention to
listening and 
speaking in English learning.Why are the skills of listening and
speaking more 
important than other skills? 
It is said that listening and speaking go first,reading and writing
follow.Listening and 
speaking are the most basic language skills in language
learning.With listening and speaking it 
is possible for language learners to achieve basic
communication.For many years,our Chinese 
students focus on only reading,neglecting listening and
speaking.The result is that we are 
tongue-tied when we meet a foreign guest.We can’t understand each
other or communicate 
effectively. 
7.Every year there is a “CCTV Cup” English Speaking Contest for
college 
students.Why is it good for students to improve their
English? 
The “CCTV Cup” English Speaking Contest is held annually and draws
quite a lot of 
attentions from our college students.Eagerness to enter this
contest is on the rise among my 
friends and classmates in these years as more and more college
students realize that speaking skill 
is very important.Last year,I joined the preliminary contest (the
first round) held on campus. 
The topic was Beijing,Olympics 2008.Before the contest,I did a lot
of research about Olympic 
Games,focused my topic on Green Olympics and then wrote my own
speech draft.After that,I 
discussed my draft with my foreign teacher,Amy.Besides,I learned to
express my ideas on the 
importance of hosting a Green Olympics in simple but provocative
language.During the process 
of writing and revising the draft and rehearsing my speech,I
learned how to write out a speech 
and how to express myself and at the same time I realized my
weakness in language learning. 
Now I try to improve my pronunciation as I come from the west part
of China with a strong 
accent even when I speak in English.This year I am going to enter
the contest again.The “CCTV 
Cup” English Speaking Contest provides us with a great opportunity
to boost our learning 
interests and enhance our English skills. 
8.In English learning,students are supposed to take some exams.How
do 
you usually prepare for English exams? 
Exams are a necessary but excruciating form of torture.In the past
years,we experienced a 
lot of exams.In the process,we learned how to take them.Now let me
share my experience of 
taking CET-4 with you.First of all,remember as many new words and
phrases as possible.By 
that I don’t mean that we remember them mechanically.I mean that
you can remember more than 
4,000 new words by reading.Learning new words in context is the
first step.The next step is to 
practice our listening in our spare time.Now,the CET-4 exams have a
high standard of listening 
for candidates and the listening part accounts for almost 40% of
the total scores.If we fail in this 
part,we have few chances to pass the exam,let alone getting a high
score.Lastly,I want to say 
that practicing our speaking skill is also important for
candidates.The qualification scores for 
Spoken English Test is 550 for CET-4 and 520 for CET-6.That kind of
tests is very demanding.If 
you don’t want to disappoint yourself,work hard to improve your
speaking skills. 
9.You have had English teachers who taught you English with
different 
methods.Tell us one of the teachers whose teaching method impressed
you most. 
I like my reading teacher very much.I think she is an innovative
teacher who always puts 
our benefits in the first place.Firstly,she tells us about the
course curriculum.With her clear 
instructions,we know what we are supposed to do at the beginning of
a new semester.Secondly, 
she doesn’t confine her teaching in the textbook but prepares a lot
of authentic reading materials 
for us.These reading materials,from classical literature to current
news,from excerpts from Jane 
Eyre to reports about Yi Jianlian,highly stimulate our reading
interest.Lastly,she encourages 
us to read extensively outside of class.In order to keep track of
our after-class reading,she buys 
each student a notebook and asks every student to keep reading
notes while doing autonomous 
reading after class.Besides,she would check our reading notes and
make some detailed 
comments bi-weekly. 
10.Do you believe in the saying “practice makes perfect” in
learning English? 
Why or why not?
