Review
This suffers from being too well known, too much an examination text, but it's worth going back to read the story of young Jane's incarceration in the red room, and her rebellious walks up to the attics of Thornfield Hall where she looks longingly over the countryside, wishes for a larger and more exciting life than she can have and hears for the first time the diabolical chuckles of the madwoman imprisoned there. Review by Pat Barker, Booker Prize-winning author of 'Regeneration Trilogy'. (Kirkus UK)

"So we open Jane Eyre....The writer has us by the hand, forces us along her road, makes us see what she sees, never leaves us for a moment or allows us to forget her. At the end we are steeped through and through with the genius, the vehemence, the indignation of Charlotte Bronte....It is the red and fitful glow of the heart's fire which illumi- nates her page." --Virginia Woolf  --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

作者简介
Charlotte Bronte was born at Thornton, Yorkshire, on April 21,1816. Her father, Patrick Bronte, became curate for life of themoorland parish of Haworth, Yorkshire, in 1820, and her mother,Maria Bronte, died the following year, leaving behind fivedaughters and a son who were cared for in the parsonage by theiraunt, Elizabeth Branwell. The eldest daughters, Maria andElizabeth, died in 1825 from tuberculosis contracted at thereligious boarding school to which they (along with Charlotte andher younger sister Emily) had been sent. (All the Bronte childrenultimately suffered from lung disease.)
Raised at home thereafter, Charlotte, Emily, their youngestsister, Anne, and brother, Branwell, lived in a fantasy world oftheir own making, drawing on their voracious reading of Byron,Scott, Shakespeare, The Arabian Nights, and gothic fiction, andwriting elaborate poetic and dramatic cycles involving thehistories of imaginary countries. Charlotte's early writingsrevolved around the kingdom of Angria, about which she wrotemelodramatic tales of passion and revenge. She spent a yearstudying at Miss Wooler's school in Roe Head (later relocated toDewsbury Moor), and went back there to teach from 1835 to 1838;subsequently she worked as a governess.

There was no possibility of taking a walk that day. We had beenwandering, indeed, in the leafless shrubbery an hour in themorning; but since dinner (Mrs. Reed, when there was no company, dined early) the cold winter wind had brought with it clouds sosombre, and a rain so penetrating, that further out-door exercisewas now out of the question.
I was glad of it: I never liked long walks, especially on chillyafternoons: dreadful to me was the coming home in the raw twilight, with nipped fingers and toes, and a heart saddened by the chidingsof Bessie, the nurse, and humbled by the consciousness of myphysical inferiority to Eliza, John, and Georgiana Reed.
The said Eliza, John, and Georgiana were now clustered roundtheir mama in the drawing-room: she lay reclined on a sofa by thefireside, and with her darlings about her (for the time neitherquarrelling nor crying) looked perfectly happy. Me, she haddispensed from joining the group; saying, 'She regretted to beunder the necessity of keeping me at a distance; but that until sheheard from Bessie, and could discover by her own observation that Iwas endeavouring in good earnest to acquire a more sociable andchildlike disposition, a more attractive and sprightlymanner,—something lighter, franker, more natural as it were—shereally must exclude me from privileges intended only for contented, happy, little children.'
'What does Bessie say I have done?' I asked.
'Jane, I don't like cavillers or questioners: besides, there issomething truly forbidding in a child taking up her elders in thatmanner. Be seated somewhere; and until you can speak pleasantly, remain silent.'
A small breakfast-room adjoined the drawing-room. I slipped inthere. It contained a book-case: I soon possessed myself of avolume, taking care that it should be one stored with pictures. Imounted into the window-seat: gathering up my feet, I satcross-legged, like a Turk; and, having drawn the red moreen curtainnearly close, I was shrined in double retirement.
