作者简介
Like almost every other Lonely Planet author he knows, NeilWilson fell into the guidebook-writing business by accident. Havingfled the rat race of the oil industry only four years aftergraduating as a geologist, he returned to university to dopostgraduate research. But academia turned out to be just as dulland constricting as industry, so like any sane person he decided togive it all up to be a penniless freelance writer. The pennilessbit was easy. On the writing side, Neil got a foot in the doorproducing articles on history and culture for a Scottish magazine, while attending a business course and sleeping on a friend'ssettee. The friend's flatmate just happened to be an editor with aguidebook publisher in Glasgow. Neil submitted a portfolio of histravel photos and smarmed his way through an interview, and nextthing he knew he was off to photograph Corfu for a guidebook. Thatwas 1988; since then Neil has written and photographed around 45guidebooks for several publishers, including HarperCollins, AAPublishing, Berlitz and Lonely Planet. He has written or cowrittenaround 20 guides for Lonely Planet, specialising in twogeographical regions, the UK and Ireland (Edinburgh, Scotland andIreland) and Eastern Europe (Prague, Czech Slovak Republics,Poland and Eastern Europe), and has also worked on the firsteditions of the Lonely Planet guides to Georgia, Armenia Azerbaijan, Malta and Brittany In addition to travel guides, Neilhas written several nonfiction books, including Great Sea Disastersand the SAS Guide to Tracking Navigation (but no, he wasnever in the SAS!), contributed a series of articles on geology andgeography to school textbooks and encyclopedias, and had articlespublished in various Scottish newspapers and magazines. He enjoyslearning new languages and can hold a conversation in French, goshopping in Turkish, and get by in Czech, Spanish, Italian, German,Portuguese, Norwegian and Russian. Neil has been an outdoorsenthusiast since childhood and is still an active hill-walker,mountain-biker, sailor, paraglider, snowboarder, and rock-climber.He has climbed and tramped in four continents, including ascents ofJebel Toubkal in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, Mount Kinabalu innorthern Borneo, the Old Man of Hoy in Scotland's Orkney Islandsand the Northwest Face of Half Dome in California's YosemiteValley. Neil was born in Glasgow, Scotland, but defected to theeast at the age of 18 and still lives in Edinburgh. Neil'sfavourite place: Wherever he happens to be headed at the time. Besttravel tip: Always take half as much gear and twice as much moneyas you think you'll need.
