All come to regret "hole day" when they find out theywill be having a surprise visitor-the President of the UnitedStates. As the teacher frantically tries to cover up the tear inher shirt that reveals her belly button, television crews enter theclassroom. When the president arrives, he talks to the childrenabout good citizenship and then allows time for questions. Marvinis so caught up in the excitement of the day that he forgets to goright home after school and finds himself in big trouble with hisparents. All is forgiven, however, when his folks see him with thepresident on TV that night. Sachar exhibits a keen sense of the waya typical third grader thinks and he sprinkles the text withbelievable dialogue. Through a perfect blend of humor andthoughtful prose, he drives home the point of what good citizenshipis without being didactic. The lively text is broken upperiodically with black-and-white drawings. Despite its ratherabrupt ending, this beginning chapter book will appeal to fans ofthe series.

Sherre likes to play with her friends. Lucky likes to catch Frisbees. Tippy likes to chew up shoes, fan letters, and Sherre's favorite toys. They all try to be good citizens, except, perhaps, Tippy.
