内容简介
The Izu Dancer, Yasunari Kawabata's first work to bring himrecog-nition as a writer, is a novella about six Izu Peninsulatravelers. As the six travelers journey together, intimacy developsand friend-ship overcomes class differences. Capturing the shyeroticism of adolescence, The lzu Dancer is a charming picture ofthe times. Yasushi Inoue's The Counterfeiter, although set inmodern times, poses universal questions that transcend culture andera. Obasute and The Full Moon both explore themes of separation, loneliness, and isolation. Through the gloomy tales, Inoue'scompassion shines, revealing yet another aspect of an author knownfor his vivid precision and economy of words.
Yasunari Kawabata (1899-1972), winner of the 1968 Nobel Prize forLiterature, was one of Japan's most distinguished novelists. Hisfirst stories were published while he was still at high school. In1927 he published The Izu Dancer. His novels largely focus onaspects of love, interwoven with melancholy and loss. Three yearsafter being awarded the Nobel Prize, he was found in a gas-filledroom in an apartment near his Kamakura house. No suicide note wasfound, however.
