This book includes 100 examples of 20th-century prints kept in
the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum of
London. Arranged chronologically, each entry represents one year of
the century and includes a full-page reproduction, along with a
page of background information about the print and artist. The
authors, members of the V&A's Department of Prints, Drawings,
and Paintings, cover a wide range of techniques, including woodcut,
lithography, etching, and photographic processes. The artists
included are mostly British, but there is also some discussion of
major printmakers from other areas of Europe and the United States.
The documentation is especially good, with notes about provenance,
print numbering, and physical de*ions. One problem, especially
for American readers, is that "V&A" is not identified as the
Victoria and Albert Museum except in the copyright notice. With
this in mind, it is recommended primarily for specialized users of
academic and art research libraries as a source of information on
prints in the V&A collection. Eric Linderman, East Cleveland
