This volume offers a generous selection of works from each of Browning's creatvie periods,emphasizing the years in which the memorable dramatic monologues were written.The experimental phase(1833-45)is represented by selections from Pauline(1833),Paracelsus(1835),Sordello(1840),Dramatic Lyrics(1842),and Dramatic Romances and Lyrics(1845),as well as the complete text of Pippa Passes(1841);the major phase (1855-69)by selections form Men and Women(1855),Dramatis Personae(1864),and The Ring and the Book(1868-69),from which Books,V,VI,and X are reprinted;and the later achievement (after 1870)by selections from Fifine at the Fair(1872),Aristophanes'Apology(1875),Pacchiarotto and How He Worked in Distemper:With Other Poems(1876).
