  Unbroken Historical Ties/Bound Together By History
  In 1954,in the aftermath ofthe Korean War and against abackdropof the trade embargoand political isolation of Chinaby the Westernbloc,Great Britainexpanded diplomatic relations with China.In Juneof that year,the UK and Chinaagreed to post charges d'affaires ineachother's countries.In September,the Chinesegovernment agreedthat the UK could posta charge d'affaires in Shanghai to handletheaffairs of British citizens there.On 17September,the UK's charged'affaires,arrived in Shanghai.With the permission ofChina'sForeign Ministry,the British diplomatset up his office at 33 EastZhongshan Road,the former address of the British Consulate.Itwasthe Cold War,and while on one hand theUK followed the US-led policyof isolatingChina,it also took history and practicalityintoaccount.Britain alone among Western bloccountries maintainedlow-leveldiplomatic relationswith the New China.
