Of all Jane Austen''s heroines, Emma Woodhouse is the mostflawed, the most infuriating, and, in the end, the most endearing.Pride and Prejudice''s Lizzie Bennet has more wit and sparkle;Catherine Morland in Northanger Abbey more imagination; and Senseand Sensibility''s Elinor Dashwood certainly more sense--but Emmais lovable precisely because she is so imperfect. Austen onlycompleted six novels in her lifetime, of which five feature youngwomen whose chances for making a good marriage depend greatly onfinancial issues, and whose prospects if they fail are rather grim.Emma is the exception: "Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition seemed to unite someof the best blessings of existence; and had lived nearly twenty-oneyears in the world with very little to distress or vex her." Onemay be tempted to wonder what Austen could possibly find to sayabout so fortunate a character. The answer is, quite a lot.
For Emma, raised to think well of herself, has such a high opinionof her own worth that it blinds her to the opinions of others. Thestory revolves around a comedy of errors: Emma befriends HarrietSmith, a young woman of unknown parentage, and attempts to remakeher in her own image. Ignoring the gaping difference in theirrespective fortunes and stations in life, Emma convinces herselfand her friend that Harriet should look as high as Emma herselfmight for a husband--and she zeroes in on an ambitious vicar as theperfect match. At the same time, she reads too much into aflirtation with Frank Churchill, the newly arrived son of familyfriends, and thoughtlessly starts a rumor about poor but beautifulJane Fairfax, the beloved niece of two genteelly impoverishedelderly ladies in the village. As Emma''s fantastically misguidedschemes threaten to surge out of control, the voice of reason isprovided by Mr. Knightly, the Woodhouse''s longtime friend andneighbor. Though Austen herself described Emma as "a heroine whomno one but myself will much like," she endowed her creation withenough charm to see her through her most egregious behavior, andthe saving grace of being able to learn from her mistakes. By theend of the novel Harriet, Frank, and Jane are all properlyaccounted for, Emma is wiser (though certainly not sadder), and thereader has had the satisfaction of enjoying Jane Austen at theheight of her powers. --Alix Wilber --This text refers to an out ofprint or unavailable edition of this title.
This is another case where a classic is being reprinted simply as atie-in to a TV/feature film presentation. Libraries, nonetheless, can benefit by picking up a quality hardcover for a niceprice.

Book De*ion
Emma, when first published in 1816, was written when Jane Austenwas at the height of her powers. In it, we have her two greatestcomic creations — the eccentric Mr. Woodhouse and thatquintissential bore, Miss Bates. In it, too, we have her mostprofound characterization: the witty, imaginative, self-deludedEmma, a heroine the author declared "no one but myself will muchlike," but who has been much loved by generations of readers.Delightfull funny, full of rich irony, Emma is regarded as one ofJane Austen's finest achievements.
作者简介
Though the domain of Jane Austen’s novels was as circumscribedas her life, her caustic wit and keen observation made her theequal of the greatest novelists in any language. Born the seventhchild of the rector of Steventon, Hampshire, on December 16, 1775,she was educated mainly at home. At an early age she began writingsketches and satires of popular novels for her family’sentertainment. As a clergyman’s daughter from a well-connectedfamily, she had an ample opportunity to study the habits of themiddle class, the gentry, and the aristocracy. At twenty-one, shebegan a novel called “The First Impressions” an early version ofPride and Prejudice. In 1801, on her father’s retirement, thefamily moved to the fashionable resort of Bath. Two years later shesold the first version of Northanger Abby to a London publisher, but the first of her novels to appear was Sense and Sensibility, published at her own expense in 1811. It was followed by Pride andPrejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), and Emma (1815).
