A seminal work of American Literature that still commands deeppraise and still elicits controversy, Adventures of HuckleberryFinn is essential to the understanding of the American soul. Therecent discovery of the first half of Twain's manu*, longthought lost, made front-page news. And this unprecedented edition, which contains for the first time omitted episodes and othervariations present in the first half of the handwritten manu*,as well as facsimile reproductions of thirty manu* pages, isindispensable to a full understanding of the novel. The changes, deletions, and additions made in the first half of the manu*indicate that Mark Twain frequently checked his impulse to write aneven darker, more confrontational book than the one he finallypublished. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailableedition of this title.

In this centenary year of the first American edition of HuckleberryFinn, Neider, who has worked long and well in the thickets of Twainscholarship (this is the ninth Twain volume he has edited), offersa most fitting tribute, for which he will be thanked in somequarters, damned in others. Neider's contribution is twofold: hehas restored to its rightful place the great rafting chapter, whichthe author had lifted from the manu*-in-progress and droppedinto Life on the Mississippi, and he has abridged some of thechildish larkiness in the portions in which Huck's friend TomSawyer intrudes into this novel. For decades, critics have lamentedthe absence of the "missing" chapter and deplored the jarringpresence of Tom in episodes that slow the narrative, but not untilnow has anyone had the temerity to set matters right. In paringback the "Tom" chapters (which he fully documents in his lengthy, spirited introduction, with literal line counts of the excisedmaterial), Neider has achieved a brisker read. Though there may besome brickbats thrown at him for this "sacrilege," few shouldobject to the belated appearance of the transplanted raftingchapter in the novel in which it clearly belongs.
