From Library Journal
Nicholas Nickleby, agentleman's son fallen upon hard times, must set out to make hisway in the world. Along the way various older, money-grubbingvillains attempt to injure him. Eventually, with the assistance ofkind patrons, he and his family achieve economic security and ahappy home. Sounds rather trite, doesn't it? Not with characterswritten by Dickens (Hard Times, Audio Reviews, LJ 5/1/98).Schoolmaster Squeers would make a fine poster boy for childabusers. Ralph Nickleby's initial desire to injure Nicholasgradually develops into a full-blown obsession. Then there are thekind Cheeryble brothers, the gentle, much-abused Smike, and a hostof other friends who provide comic relief. Martin Jarvis does anoutstanding job of reading this book. His ingenues sound young (afrequent problem area for male readers) while his villains aredeliciously evil. The only problems are with the abridgment. Inseveral places, choppy editing has left brief, disconnected scenesand/or character cameos without relevance to the abridged tale.Still, this is a charming presentation and a wonderful bridge to aclassic book. [Editor's Note--The following is a combined review with DAVIDCOPPERFIELD, GHOST STORIES, GREAT EXPECTATIONS, HARD TIMES, MARTINCHUZZLEWIT, THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD, OLIVER TWIST, OUR MUTUALFRIEND, THE PICKWICK PAPERS, and A TALE OF TWO CITIES.]--NewMillennium presents the distinguished Academy Award winner PaulScofield interpreting abridgments of the novels and stories ofCharles Dickens. These are excellent readings, sonorous andcompelling. However, they lack the verve and character of the oldVictorian qualities that have been so wonderfully captured oncassette by Martin Jarvis and Miriam Margolyes, among others. Andwhile few authors benefit more from pruning than thepaid-by-the-word Dickens, some of these cuttings are far toodrastic. In addition, hurried post-production is evident innumerous audible edits, frequent mouth noises, and occasionaloverlapping of announcer and narrator. Y.R. 作者简介

Charles Dickens was born on 7 February 1812 in Landport in Portsmouth. His father was a clerk in the Navy Pay Office who often ended up in financial trouble. When Dickens was twelve years’ old he was sent to work in a shoe polish factory because his father had been imprisoned for debt.In 1833 he began to publish short stories and essays in newspapers and magazines. The Pickwick Papers, his first commercial success, was published in 1836, the same year that he married Catherine Hogarth. The serialisation of Oliver Twist began in 1837 while The Pickwick Papers was still running. Many other novels followed and Dickens became a celebrity in America as well as Britain. He also set up and edited the journals Household Words (1850–9) and All the Year Round (1859–70). Charles Dickens died on 9 June 1870 leaving his last novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, unfinished. He is buried in Westminster Abbey.
