"The most perfect of all the Dickens novels."—Virginia Woolf

内容简介

(Book Jacket Status: Jacketed) Charles Dickens's most celebrated novel and the author's own favorite, "David Copperfield" is the classic account of a boy growing up in a world that is by turns magical, fearful, and grimly realistic. In a book that is part fairy tale and part thinly veiled autobiography, Dickens transmutes his life experience into a brilliant series of comic and sentimental adventures in the spirit of the great eighteenth-century novelists he so much admired. Few readers can fail to be touched by David's fate, and fewer still to be delighted by his story. The cruel Murdstone, the feckless Micawber, the unctuous and sinister Uriah Heep, and David Copperfield himself, into whose portrait Dickens puts so much of his own early life, form a central part of our literary legacy. This edition reprints the original Everyman preface by G. K. Chesterton and includes thirty-nine illustrations by Phiz.

"My other piece of advice, Copperfield," said Mr. Micawber, "you know. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen nineteen six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds ought and six, result misery. The blossom is blighted, the leaf is withered, the God of day goes down upon the dreary scene and--and in short you are for ever floored. As I am!" --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Beginning in 1854 up through to his death in 1870, CharlesDickens abridged and adapted many of his more popular works andperformed them as staged readings. This version, each pageillustrated with lovely watercolor paintings, is a beautifulexample of one of these adaptations.
Because it is quite seriously abridged, the story concentratesprimarily on the extended family of Mr. Peggotty: his orphanednephew, Ham; his adopted niece, Little Emily; and Mrs. Gummidge,self-described as "a lone lorn creetur and everythink wentcontrairy with her." When Little Emily runs away withCopperfield''s former schoolmate, leaving Mr. Peggotty completelybrokenhearted, the whole family is thrown into turmoil. But Dickensweaves some comic relief throughout the story with the introductionof Mr. and Mrs. Micawber, and David''s love for his pretty, silly"child-wife," Dora. Dark nights, mysterious locations, and thefinal destructive storm provide classic Dickensian drama. Althoughthis is not David Copperfield in its entirety, it is a greatintroduction to the world and the language of Charles Dickens.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition ofthis title.
