内容简介

Written in 1852, this grand indictment of Victorian society-- on its surface a mystery story-- deals with the themes of the vagaries of the High Court of Chancery and misplaced children. From the Inside Flap Introduction by Barbara Hardy

作者简介
Charles Dickens was born in a little house in Landport,Portsea, England, on February 7, 1812. The second of eightchildren, he grew up in a family frequently beset by financialinsecurity. At age eleven, Dickens was taken out of school and sentto work in London backing warehouse, where his job was to pastelabels on bottles for six shillings a week. His father JohnDickens, was a warmhearted but improvident man. When he wascondemned the Marshela Prison for unpaid debts, he unwisely agreedthat Charles should stay in lodgings and continue working while therest of the family joined him in jail. This three-month separationcaused Charles much pain; his experiences as a child alone in ahuge city–cold, isolated with barely enough to eat–haunted him forthe rest of his life.
